Understanding a Heavy Vehicle Suspension System

A suspension system does far more than make driving comfortable. It forms the critical connection between the vehicle's chassis and the road, allowing heavy commercial vehicles to travel safely under constantly changing operating conditions.

Every bump, corner and braking event generates forces that would otherwise be transferred directly to the chassis, cargo and driver. The suspension system absorbs these forces, controls vehicle movement and maintains tyre contact with the road, improving stability, steering response and braking performance.

Shock absorbers control the up-and-down movement of the suspension, reducing oscillation, body roll and vibration while improving steering stability, braking performance and tyre life. Air bellows, also known as air springs, use compressed air to support vehicle weight, absorb road shocks and maintain the correct ride height regardless of changing loads. This improves driver comfort while protecting suspension components from excessive stress. 

Air suspension valves continuously regulate the amount of compressed air entering or leaving the air bellows, automatically maintaining the correct chassis height whether the vehicle is fully loaded or travelling empty.

Protecting the Driver and the Vehicle

The suspension system also isolates the driver from the harsh realities of the road.

Cabin mountings reduce the vibration and noise transmitted from the chassis to the cab, helping minimise driver fatigue during long-haul operations while protecting cabin components from excessive movement. 

Spring mountings securely support the leaf spring assemblies, reducing impact loads transferred to the chassis while maintaining proper suspension geometry under heavy loads. 

Even gas springs, commonly fitted to cabin panels and engine hoods, improve safety by providing smooth, controlled lifting and preventing heavy panels from closing unexpectedly during maintenance.
